Benelux, food safety
05 Jun. 2025
In the context of the rapid growth of international e-commerce, a Benelux delegation visited Amazon’s logistics center in Mönchengladbach. The purpose of this visit was to highlight the importance of food safety in the online sale of food products. The aim is to ensure that sales platforms take greater responsibility for irregularities and act accordingly.
The food safety authorities of Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg are joining forces to initiate a dialogue with major online commerce platforms, such as Amazon. They want to encourage the company to actively cooperate in complying with food safety regulations.
“Online platforms occupy a key position in the supply chain,” said the delegation. “They can raise awareness among sellers about their obligations, impose certain conditions such as mandatory food safety training, and even monitor some of their suppliers.”
This visit to Amazon was not a random event. It is a direct follow-up to the Benelux study day held on November 30, 2023, focused on “stakeholder management,” during which online marketplaces were identified as key players in strengthening food safety standards in e-commerce.
The involved Benelux authorities hope that these initial contacts will lead to closer collaboration with Amazon and other platforms, with one clear goal: ensuring that only safe food products are offered on virtual shelves.
