Benelux Day 2026: Where the Benelux flag flies, borders disappear

On Friday, 4 September 2026, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg will jointly colour the streetscape with the Benelux flag. For the first time, flags will be raised at dozens of locations as a visible symbol of a partnership that has transcended borders for more than eighty years. From ministries and parliament buildings to provincial authorities, police services, ports and other public institutions, the Benelux flag will be flown across the Benelux region.
On the occasion of the official Benelux Day on Saturday, 5 September, the Benelux Union is making the strength of cross-border cooperation visible. Governments, institutions and organisations actively contributing to Benelux cooperation are taking part in the flag-raising initiative, sending a clear joint message: cooperation does not stop at the border.
The Benelux flag thus becomes a symbol of connection, trust and practical cooperation between Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg.

Cross-Border Police Operations
Alongside this symbolic initiative, the Benelux countries will also demonstrate what cooperation looks like in practice through joint cross-border police operations.
These actions illustrate how cooperation under the Benelux Police Treaty contributes to an effective response to cross-border security challenges. By exchanging information and conducting operations together, police services strengthen citizens’ safety across borders. In doing so, the Benelux countries continue to play a pioneering role in Europe.
Cooperation That Makes a Difference Every Day
Benelux Day provides an opportunity to highlight the added value of cooperation between Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg.
The Benelux makes it easier to live, work and study across borders, notably through the mutual recognition of diplomas and, in the near future, professional qualifications.
In addition, the three countries cooperate closely on cross-border security, innovative mobility solutions such as autonomous driving, energy, crisis management and the internal market. Many initiatives developed within the Benelux later serve as inspiration for wider European cooperation.
Background
Benelux Day is celebrated annually on 5 September, commemorating the signing of the London Customs Convention by Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg in 1944. This agreement laid the foundation for the Benelux Customs Union, later followed by the Benelux Economic Union and today’s Benelux Union.
Since 2024, Benelux Day has been organised to showcase cooperation between the three countries and to raise public awareness of its benefits. The 2026 edition marks the third celebration of the event.
