Benelux strengthens information exchange on drought and water management

The persistent drought affecting the Benelux countries and neighbouring regions highlights the importance of close cooperation between the competent crisis management authorities. During a meeting between the national crisis centres of Belgium, the Netherlands and North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany), the authorities involved exchanged information on the situation in their respective regions and discussed ways to further strengthen operational contacts.

The meeting was organised at the initiative of the Dutch National Coordinator for Security and Counterterrorism (NCTV) against a backdrop of exceptionally dry weather conditions and low water levels in several parts of the region.

Although the drought situation differs from one country to another, the competent authorities face similar challenges in terms of water management and drought response. The situation is therefore being closely monitored, and measures are being taken at regional or local level where necessary.

Strengthening information sharing
During the meeting, participants stressed the importance of rapid and efficient information exchange, particularly when measures taken in one country may have an impact on neighbouring countries.

The crisis centres involved therefore expressed their intention to further strengthen their operational contacts. A clearer overview of the relevant contact points should help ensure that information can be shared even more rapidly when required.

In addition, the existing Benelux consultation framework will continue work on developing an overview of the crisis management structures and measures used by the different countries to address drought, water shortages and other water-related challenges.

Cross-border cooperation in practice
This cooperation is part of the broader efforts of the Benelux countries to address cross-border challenges together. The recent wildfire in the High Fens illustrated the value of strong contacts and mutual support between the relevant services across borders.

By exchanging experiences and keeping one another informed in a timely manner, the Benelux countries are strengthening their capacity to respond quickly and effectively to situations affecting multiple countries, thereby enhancing the safety and resilience of citizens and regions alike.
