Benelux aims to be a hub in the European hydrogen network

21 May. 2025

The Benelux countries want to play a leading role in the future European hydrogen network. During the World Hydrogen Summit on May 20 in Rotterdam, the Benelux Secretariat, together with the Dutch Ministry for Climate and Green Growth, organized a special side event. The goal: to bring together ports, grid operators, and policymakers from the Benelux, Germany, and France to strengthen cross-border cooperation.

Ports as hydrogen import bubs
During the session, the ports of Rotterdam, North Sea Port, Antwerp-Bruges, and Duisburg presented their ambitions as gateways for the import of hydrogen and derivatives such as methanol and ammonia. The crucial role of ports in the energy transition was emphasized.

Call for European coordination
Participants highlighted the importance of technical, legal, and financial cooperation across borders. They called for uniform implementation of EU legislation and a shared vision on the financing and market development of hydrogen.

Benelux drives innovation across borders
George Reding, Director of Renewable Energy at Luxembourg’s Ministry of the Economy, emphasized that the Benelux should act as the beating heart of the European hydrogen network—a driving force for innovation and a connector of cross-border ecosystems. “Benelux must enable and actively promote innovation by linking existing initiatives across national borders.”

Weekers: cross-border infrastructure requires broad coordination
In a video message, Frans Weekers, Secretary-General of the Benelux, stressed that the Benelux countries, together with France and Germany, are working to accelerate the hydrogen market. However, he stated that this cooperation must go beyond governments alone. “Cross-border infrastructure requires close coordination with all relevant stakeholders. Interconnection within the Benelux and with neighboring countries is crucial.”

Clear message
The energy transition does not stop at national borders. The Benelux stands ready to play a central role in building a connected and innovative European hydrogen network.

In 2023, a Benelux study highlighted the cross-border future of hydrogen.
