19 Sep. 2025

During the Benelux Strategic Police Consultation, chaired by Luxembourg, the police chiefs of Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg gathered to address current security challenges. They reviewed dossiers on General Aviation (crime via air traffic), cybercrime, mutual assistance, and cooperation in policing highways and railways.

Mr Michel-Etienne Tilemans, deputy secretary general, opened the consultation: “I remain convinced that police cooperation is the finest achievement of our joint action in recent years. It embodies the excellence of a partnership based on trust, complementary strengths and a shared commitment to guaranteeing the freedom and security of our fellow citizens.

The delegations shared recent developments from their respective countries and exchanged insights on the outcomes of cross-border regional meetings. They also discussed progress on the Benelux Police Treaty.

A notable moment during the meeting was the first participation of the Dutch Royal Marechaussee. The Marechaussee officially joined as a new participant, broadening the Netherlands’ commitment and enhancing focus on cross-border cooperation.

Finally, the Netherlands introduced Ms. Van Breda as the new Benelux portfolio holder. She will now coordinate the Dutch contribution to the consultation.
