Paderborn University opens new research unit for Benelux Studies

The Benelux region now has a new hub for research, education and knowledge exchange in Germany. On 22 September, Paderborn University officially inaugurated its new research unit, “Benelux-Studien.”

The new unit brings together research and teaching activities focusing on Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. Its work will cover a wide range of topics, including history, culture, politics, economics and cross-border cooperation.

The Benelux Union was represented at the opening ceremony by its Secretary-General, Ariadne Petridis, and Stefan van Heeck, Benelux Liaison Officer for North Rhine-Westphalia. On this occasion, Ariadne Petridis stressed the importance of strengthening knowledge and understanding of cross-border cooperation.

“Cooperation does not stop with governments and institutions. It also depends on people, researchers, students and professionals who are willing to look beyond borders, ask new questions and build connections. They help us understand what works, what can be improved, and which lessons from the Benelux experience may also be relevant elsewhere in Europe,” said Petridis.

Through this new unit, Paderborn University also aims to strengthen links with practice. Students will benefit from opportunities for internships, practical projects and research activities. Digital learning programmes, educational materials and other initiatives for schools and the wider public will also be developed.

The initiative builds on existing projects such as the digital platform BeneluxNet and the interdisciplinary master’s programme BeNeLux-Studien. It also relies on close cooperation with partners in Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and North Rhine-Westphalia.

Cooperation with North Rhine-Westphalia is particularly significant in this context. The region maintains strong economic, cultural and societal ties with the Benelux countries. Research into these cross-border connections can contribute to a better understanding of how cooperation beyond national borders functions.

Paderborn University thus becomes a new meeting place for all those who wish to study, understand and further strengthen the Benelux region.
